Today I wanted something a little more... muted. Bright colors are OK but I tend to fall back on more subdued shades. I've also had my fill of black lately and took the opportunity to slip on another pair of SLink's awesome Sydney Stilettos.

The past couple weeks I've been on the lookout for a good prim skirt that would go well with multiple outfits. This high-waisted mini from BabyDoll fits the bill, mostly. It's a bit of a fixer-upper, but that's true of most prim skirts on my wider-than-average shape. It comes in black, white, and shades of gray, and the price is right at L$50 apiece.

Finally, I put some glasses back on! It's been a while and these half-frames from Crie Style worked nicely without distracting too much. I also added an older set of jewelry from Shiny Things that I haven't worn in a long time.

The other day I picked up Amacci's new lingerie set in purple. Sorry I've been away so long! I got sucked into playing some new games. Oops. *whistles innocently*

Anyway! After skimming about 4,000 fashion blog posts (I just look at the pictures!) this dress from Pacadi Jasha caught my eye. Yes, that's a system skirt! I've never hated system skirts — well, not exactly. Prim skirts tend to make me twitch because they never look quite right on my shape. System skirts don't look that great, either, but at least I know they'll cover me properly.

I'm really, really liking Free Speerit's Fiona line of skins. Without a doubt they're among my favorites. The eyebrows really wow me — they're just the right shape. The skintone is just a teeny bit red/orange for my taste, but I don't mind. The skin is too good overall to give it a pass on color alone.

To top things off, I added Samantha, one of Truth's latest designs. I don't usually wear hair that covers one eye, so I decided to step out of my comfort zone a bit. Not wearing glasses (another change I've made recently) made this choice a lot easier, since I didn't have to worry about weird collisions between the hair and the glasses.

The other day I picked up these shorts from So Many Styles. What I didn't realize until I put them on was just how short they were! Fortunately, pairing the shorts with the Playtime skirt from Sn@tch's "An Hour of Playtime" set worked out great. The Playtime skirt is all-prim, so having something on underneath isn't a bad idea.

Topping it all off is the Hooded Blazer from Decoy, sans hood. The hood sculpt is well-made but didn't really fit with the look I was putting together. The blazer looks quite nice despite no prim collar or cuffs.

I've had my eye on the new Fiona skin from Free Speerit ever since I first noticed it in the blogs. When I read there was a freebie of it available as a group gift, I jumped at the opportunity. I'm far from disappointed! While the skintone is a little more red/orange than I normally wear, it still looks really good. Few dark skins work well with my shape — this is definitely one of those skins. I know I'll be checking out demos of the other makeups available in this skin line and maybe spending a little money soon!

Tesla Vixen Desire!

Tesla Miles came out with her latest stilettos today, called Vixen Desire. Being the shoe ho that I am, I had to have these as soon as I saw the pic in the fashion feeds. These are easily Tesla's best shoes yet and not only reflect the amount of work she's put into them, but what she's learned since making her first shoes.

Visually, Vixen Desire shares a lot with Tesla's Natasha line of shoes. Vixen Desire's differences are subtle but significant. Most noticable when zoomed-in is the stitching along the topline of the shoe. It adds much-needed detail to the shoe's overall look. Like Natasha, Vixen Desire is only five prims per foot, which means they rez quickly.

The most important change is how Tesla achieved extra heel height without the use of prim feet. A script in the shoes plays a small animation that bends the avatar's feet downward slightly. Again, a subtle but significant difference. This means no need for sculpted prim feet, no need for color-matching, and no problems wearing hosiery with the shoes — all big advantages. It also means you can easily wear prim pant cuffs or ankle jewelry with the shoes.

This little bit of SL scripting wizardry comes with a couple of caveats, however. The foot animations have the potential to interfere with other animations. Depending on the other animations played on your avatar at the time, you may notice your feet tilted at an odd angle while wearing these shoes. In my testing, this happened very rarely. The foot animation never interfered with my animation overrider. If it interfered with my dances or furniture, I couldn't tell without looking closely or doing an A/B comparison.

The only time I saw mispositioned feet as a problem was when using a pose stand with high-priority static poses. (Fellow fashion bloggers, take note!) This problem was easily solved, though, by taking a copy of the foot animation from the shoes and playing it on top of the static pose in use. Doing so once again placed my feet in the correct position.

Overall, I really like these shoes! The quality is excellent and the scripting is (given SL's many technical limitations) well done. Pricing for Vixen Desire is L$500 per pair or L$3,500 for an 11-color fatpack. Permissions are copy/no-modify/no-transfer. Go get 'em!

UPDATE, October 13: Tesla has corrected the animation problem I described above! The foot animation now plays correctly with pose stands, furniture and dances. Tesla now also includes a separate copy of the animation with the shoes in case you need it. If you purchased the previous version of the shoes, just contact Tesla for a replacement.

My first Look of the Day for men! I'd planned to do this a long time ago but never got around to it.

The standout for me in this look is the shoes. (I know, big surprise coming from me, right?) While Urban Bomb Unit's PornStars have been blogged to death by now, I'd never paid attention to them until I needed a good pair of sneakers. And wow, are these ever good! I'm totally floored by these shoes. It's not just the attention to detail, but the customizability! Every little bit of these shoes can be changed to a wide variety of colors and textures. These shoes are sim-friendly, too: once you have them customized the way you want, just make a copy of them, then use the built-in script removal command. Zero-lag shoes!

UBU really needs to get into the women's shoe market. They'd make a killing offering this kind of variety and quality at a reasonable price.

Today's outfit is a confluence of several things I've wanted to use lately.

It's no secret I like purple. I haven't worn this corset from SF Design in quite a while (pic NSFW!), and I've been itching to use it as outerwear. On top of that, I got the opportunity to dig out my Natasha heels from Tesla Miles. They're an old favorite of mine, and I'd never worn the purple ones — ack!

I've wanted new jewelry for a long time now. I always have trouble finding jewelry I like, so I jumped at the chance to check out the Jewelry Fair. I think it's official: Mouse Mimistrobell is my new crack dealer. Her Abalone Dreams necklace is simple, goes with just about anything, and nicely draws attention to my cleavage. ;)

Then there's the backdrop. I received this prefab hallway as a gift through the Distributors' Showcase Network. The walls, doors and floor are customizable via a menu and include several different textures. A visit to Voshie Paine's shop, La Petite Morte, is definitely in my future!

I wanted something simple and elegant today. I also wasn't feeling much for color, so I went with black — for everything. :P The only color is a hint of purple in the gems of my necklace and earrings.

I love these new pumps from SLink. The last pair of D'Orsays I wore much were made by Sylfie Minogue, long before the days of sculpts or prim feet. I'm happy to say these shoes are more than a worthy successor!

Today's outfit sprang from winning a Midnight Mania prize. Thalia's Fashion Collection had a few colors of their Latexx Diva outfit up for grabs. Not having anything to lose, I registered, and what do you know! Next day I had a copy of the outfit in my inventory!

I knew I could pair the outfit with N-Core's Stylus heels in "rain" (read: gray with a tinge of light blue) but I wanted to do more than just slap on some shoes. Then I remembered I had some old tattoos I'd used for a cyberpunkish look I'd made a long time ago. After recoloring them, I added a pair of shades and one of Discord Designs's styles from Hair Fair. Similarly themed earrings jewelry from Miriel and Shiny Things completed the look.

Today I was determined to wear the pink Stylus heels from N-Core, especially after my diverted attempt of the other day! I rummaged through my inventory and tried things on one after another until I found a close match from one of my old standbys: Little Rebel. Jonquille's store closed a while back, but that'll never stop me from wearing some of her great designs!

Truthfully, I'm not entirely satisfied with this outfit. The shoes are a bit pinker and a bit darker than the top I'm wearing. I know, I know, I'm just being obsessively nitpicky again! I kept accessories simple with a classic jewelry set from Caroline Apollo and the watch I recently bought from GOS.

The hair, called "Jana's Curls," was made by Imani Moseley of Fetish Boutique. I met Imani waaaaay back when I was only a couple weeks old! I was really happy to find out she'd started making hair, and I've yet to find hair that looks quite like this style. I wear it often!

I put together today's pic using techniques from Ryker Beck's blog. I've had trouble with greenscreen compositing in the past, and Ryker's instructions made it really simple!

Yes, I'm finally making some new animations! It's been way too long. I'm starting slow, and I suspect my first batch won't be up to par compared to what some of the great animation makers are cranking out. (Luth Brodie is my idol!) Gotta start somewhere though! I definitely didn't plan on such a monochromatic look today! As I've mentioned elsewhere, I often build my outfits from the shoes up. :) Today I wanted to make something around N-Core's pink Stylus pumps. It's a rather hot pink, though, so I was having trouble finding something to go with it.

I stopped by Sn@tch hoping for something that would work when I spied the Lucky Chair with my letter on it. After grabbing that prize, the chair came up with a wildcard! Ok, I looked around... nobody else there! I grabbed that one too. Then it came up with a wildcard again! This time somebody else was around, so I backed off. (Fair's fair, right?) I waited...

They stopped by the chair, then walked off.

... OK, THEN, FINE. *yoink* Grabbed that prize too. Hey, nobody else wanted it! :D While there I also picked up their Impact Skirt. I then hopped on home so I could try stuff on.

The third prize, as it turned out, was a set of Sn@tch's Candy Stockings. How gray is a candy color, I'm not sure, but I won't complain! Once I paired the stockings with the black skirt, though, inspiration struck, and I rummaged through my inventory for more grays and blacks. I didn't want to overaccessorize this time, so I tried to keep simple anything I did put on.

A final touch was the garter from Digital Dragon Designs. It added just a touch of sexy. I spent some time refitting it to my thigh, but it was worth it!

Today's look starts with another outfit from the Cupcakes gift bag sale! It's bag #7. The gift bags are going away soon -- be sure to grab one (or more) while you still can! They come with an outfit, eyes, skins and a shape, and are a bargain at L$250 each.

The white of the top nudged me into wearing my white N-Core pumps today. I added black tights from *Sheer* for contrast and to match the shorts. The hat, coat and gloves were more of an afterthought, but I think they tie the outfit together nicely! They also unintentionally added a Carmen Sandiego flair to the whole look. :)

Oh, about that hat... I love this hat! It's a fedora from Illusions, Siyu Suen's great little shop of masks, hats and other accessories. It gets better: the hat is not only copy/mod, but the hat and the hatband are color/texture-change! It'll work with just about anything.

Cupcakes is holding a gift bag sale! Several bags of goodies (skins, eyes, shapes, and clothes) are available in the front entrance of the store for L$250 each. When I saw this particular dress I knew I had to have it. For some reason I've always thought babydoll dresses wouldn't work on my shape. (I am loath to flatten my av's rear, even for system skirts. *sigh*) I bit the bullet, though, and put on my zero-butt shape for this outfit. To my surprise, it looked great!

Again with the N-Core pumps. I know, I know. :D I have all the colors, though, and I'm determined to make an outfit with each color! Besides, I love 'em!

Now for the watch... I really like the design of this watch. It's very intricate. It's also modifyable -- a must for jewelry. This watch has a ton of scripts, though. I strongly suggest editing the watch and selecting "Set Scripts to Not Running in Selection" from the Tools menu in your viewer. Do we really need working watches in SL? If I need to know the time, I just use the clock next to my computer in RL!

Another daring look for me today. I blame the shoes -- I can't dress conservatively while wearing these heels! As we've come to expect from shoes with prim toes, the toenails come in multiple polish colors an includes an optional colorable toe ring.

The top and skirt are from Sn@tch. The ribbons and the polka dots on the top come in a range of colors, all in one package. Be warned, though -- the skirt is all prims with no glitchpants! Be sure you're wearing something under it. :D

Three years ago my newbie self rezzed for the first time on Orientation Island. It's hard to believe I've stuck with SL this long, to be honest. If you told me back then where I'd be in SL today, I'd probably have laughed in disbelief.

For all its warts, I still love SL and the people I've met because of it. Thanks to all my friends for making it the great ride it's been!

Men's Basic AO Now On Sale

After weeks of friends telling me to get off my butt and do this... I did it. :) I took the anims most guys might want or need in an AO, set it all up, and stuck it in a box.

If you know a guy who can't configure an AO to save his life -- or worse, uses no animations at all -- then this is the answer. Just attach it and go: walk, run, sit, and five stands. It's all there. It uses a ZHAO II so it's all on the HUD and easy to turn on and off.

The AO is transferrable, so it's easy to buy as a gift. Help rid SL of one more duck-walk today! :D

I've added two new AO sits for the ladies to the vendors. In fact, I've replaced all those vendor prims with the kind you sit on and click to view the animations. It should be easier to find the animation you want now. If there's problems with the new vendors, please let me know!

New Store on the Way!

I finally bit the bullet and bought some land. (Well, rented. Leased. Whatever. You know what I mean.) The folks over at Azure Islands had a small commercial plot available, so I snapped it up.

Now I just have to make the time over the next few days to do something with it. Once the store's ready I'll probably have a grand opening sale or something else appropriate.

No really! But yeah, it's been ages since I've been around this blog. I've had a lot of RL get in my way the past few months. I finally managed to drag myself back to SL for a bit, and I'm (slowly) making things again. This time, I'm dabbling with furniture. Here's what I've got so far:

If this furniture looks simple, that's on purpose. It's designed to be low-prim. My first design was a lot more complicated (a couple dozen prims per seat!) so I tried to strike a balance between looks and efficiency. The set isn't static, either: not only will the seats support multiple sitting poses without poseballs, but the table will rez extra chairs as more people sit down.

I'm hoping to get this up for sale in the next few weeks. I just need to do some testing first. The scripting's definitely been the toughest part of this project!

Customer Service Needs Help These Days

My grandmother passed away recently. When one of my aunts called the phone company to have my grandmother's telephone turned off, she had an interesting conversation with the customer service representative. The CS person told my aunt they couldn't turn the phone off because the phone was in my grandfather's name, and that he would have to call them to cancel the service.

There's one small problem with my grandfather calling: he died thirty years ago, and my grandmother never bothered to change the name on the phone's account! When my aunt pointed this out to the CS rep, the reply was, "gee, we're not sure what to do, then." My aunt asked if she could just let the account lapse through non-payment. "Oh, no," the CS rep said. "They'd get a bad credit rating if they did that!"

My aunt's response: "..."

My aunt then asked if a death certificate presented to the phone company would be sufficient cause to terminate the account. The CS rep wasn't sure, but thought that would work.

Geez. Where do they find these people?

Texture Theft, IP and Paradigm Shifts

(This one's a little late, but hey, I'm just getting started here. Bear with me. Also, standard disclaimer: these are just my opinions. Your mileage may vary.)

Yet another clothing designer gets ripped off. Grr. Ginny Talamasca is without a doubt one of the more talented designers in SL. I suppose it figures that being such is like walking around with a bullseye on your forehead -- or, in this case, on your textures. Life is full of people willing to profit from the work of others.

Unfortunately, there seems little anyone can really do to prevent texture theft in SL. It's not really the fault of Linden Lab, either. Blame the way computers work: if your computer can see (i.e., read) the textures, then it can write the textures, too. The only difference between your screen and a file is the computer's writing the texture to a different place.

According to SL's page on the DMCA, LL will remove infringing content if you file a notice. Scuttlebutt on the forums says that's not happening, though, or that enforcement is lax at best. My guess? There's probably so much infringment going on that LL couldn't keep up if they tried.

I can't help but draw parallels to the music industry here. Lots of people download music. What can the recording industry do about it? Not a whole lot. Sure, they can sic lawyers on people and the courts can prosecute the offenders, but history has shown before that criminalizing a behavior doesn't always deter that behavior. Just look at the prohibition of alcohol or the war on drugs in America for examples of that.

The comparison between the music industry and the SL content industry isn't exact, of course. The RIAA is a big corporation only concerned with money; content creators in SL are for the most part your average joe just trying to make an extra buck or two on the side and have some fun. The RIAA already has lots of money and lawyers for their "war on music"; most content creators have squat in that area, and so can't bring that kind of power to bear on LL or those who steal their textures.

Some designers watermark their textures. That protection has its limits, though, as Strife Onizuka notes in this forum post:

Textures can be easily stolen [...] As long as images can be edited watermarks can be removed; no matter how good the watermarking scheme. Any watermarking scheme that LL defined, that definition could then be used to strip the watermark.

What to do? To me, the problem isn't the textures, the data, or even the computers. The problem lies with the people and their behavior. If you really want people to stop stealing textures (or downloading music, to continue the comparison), you have to change their reasons for wanting to take them in the first place. Unfortunately, I don't know how that can be done -- it's no simple problem, or I suspect we'd have solved it already, and this discussion would be moot.

Do I think it's OK to steal textures? Hell no. I'd be angry if somebody stole my work and repackaged it as their own. Do I think I could really do anything about it, though? Nope, at least not as far as removing the illicit copies go. Once they're out there, they're out there. I'd probably come up with something new that would render the old designs obsolete, but that doesn't prevent the thief from stealing those textures as well.

What's the monetary value of something which requires lots of effort to produce the first time, but no effort to produce infinite copies?

CGBG: Tights Multipack

(No, this isn't a new CGBG product, but I figured I'd throw it up here anyway, just for practice.)

Here's Cool Gear by Gorham's most popular item, by far: tights! I like wearing stockings, but sometimes it doesn't look right with a short skirt. I decided to fix my problem and hopefully fill a need that others might have, too. :D

The tights are fully tintable, and like my stockings and panties sets, come in versions with or without backseams, and with tintable or black trim. In addition, the upper half of the tights comes on both the pants and underpants layers so you can wear them with just about anything. There's three versions of the waist: regular panty, crotchless panty, and sheer-to-waist.

It seems fitting that my first "serious" post is about clothes. :P

I've been looking for the outfit in this picture for ages now. I even posted to the SL forums about it once, but never got a good answer. I've looked around the grid for it more than once, but anyone who's randomly searched for things in-world knows how fruitless that can be at times.

Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe this isn't my thing.

So I finally caved in and set up a blog. The last time I tried anything like this, I was seven(?) years old and tried to write a diary. I remember my last entry: "Maybe this isn't my thing, keeping a diary." That might be true for blogging as well -- we'll see.

Don't be surprised to see the layout change a lot. I'm still playing around with the blog software and tweaking the templates. It's going to be ugly for a while yet!
